I think it is absolutely wonderful that Dave MacDonald has been selected for induction ino the National Corvette Hall of Fame. Dave was certainly one of the most talented Corvette drivers (and Cobra too of course) and worthy of this honor.

(PS. I’ve tried several times to post a comment in your guest book but couldn’t)

I’m sorry if this is a duplicate post but I think your guestbook is not working. Congratulations to Dave MacDonald’s family for Dave getting in the Corvette HOF. In my opinion he should have been in a long time ago. He was so much fun to watch racing a Corvette. I was lucky to see him race in Pomona Ca and remember to this day how fast he took the corners. Congratulations!

Great great great that Dave MacDonald will be in the corvette hall of fame. He deserves to be there and so does Bob Bondurant. This is a great website for honoring Dave, he was an amazing race car driver but I agree with the other poster that the guestbook page does not seem to work!

Big Carroll Shelby fan and followed his career. Dave MacDonald played a major role in the success of the Cobra, even winning its first race. It’s nice that people can come to this site to learn about Dave and his racing career. Well done

Rich or Vicki, I am doing a historical piece on Corvette and would like to talk to you about your Mom and Dad picking up the ’63 Z06 Corvettes in St. Louis.

Can you email me back when you have time?

Thanks,
Chet Burks

I was a senior in high school in 1964, working in a concession stand underneath the stands on the main straight at Indy. We had cut a deal with the ushers on the top tier of the main straight and I was able to watch the start from the aisle of the top tier. I saw the wreck and later that day the ambulance carrying Dave came by our stand. That memory still with me almost 50 years later. I ran into Dave’s brother, Doug, at a car show last week and he told me about this website. At the time the Indy paper didn’t give all of Dave’s accomplishments, this website was an eye opener for me.

To Dave McDonald a life not lived long ago. Thanks Doug for informing me of this website.

Each year around the running of the indy 500 I think of Dave. I lived in chatsworth california when dave was killed in the 1964 race and it was a very sad day. He and dan gurney were local heros and we loved to read about his racing in the newspapers. Dave is remembered fondly.

I am looking for a photo of Dave from the Times GP which shows him going into a right turn at almost a 45 degree angle. Can anyone help?

Also, do any of Dave’s solid axle Corvette race cars still exist?

It’s been a delight to search thru the website and learn about Dave. The ’64 500 was the race that captured my attention and started my love for racing. I knew very little about Dave aside that he drove Cobras and King Cobras for Shelby. I didn’t know about his success in stock cars and how well known he was in the racing community.

Thanks for putting the site up, and I hope more content will be added in the future!!!

I love these old video’s I just watched the 1963 Road America 500 video and they mention my father getting passed. He is in car 26 i think it was a 1960 Corvette Special. The mark is 4;49 of the video. I would love to download the video and take a snapshot of him in the car. smile

My father was Chuck Frederick who raced against Dave in the early 1960’s. The video of 1961 Road America Race my Father was in car #39 Corvette. At about 1 minute into the film he comes around the corner and goes by the filmer. Then at a few seconds after 5 min he goes by again.

I cannot take a pic of the video on the internet and I would love to have a still of him in that car. I am trying to record his races for his grandchildren as he passed away in 1998.

Any help would be appreciated

Steve Frederick

I think that I may have the 1959 Corvette Special you are talking about that was raced and owned by Dave MacDonald and Pat Mathis. I would love to compare notes about the car and see if I am correct. Do you have the Vin number of the original vehicle?

I was reading about the Carroll Shelby reunion in the NY Times and it gave a link to this site. I grew up in California and REMEMBER DAVE MACDONALD, he was a fantastic race car driver and our local hero! So sad we were when Dave was killed in the Indianapolis 500. It is wonderful that you have this website for new generations to learn about Dave and for others like me to rekindle fond memories. Dave MacDonald was one of the best ever!

I attended the Ford-Cobra-Shelby Reunion in Pomona last Saturday, and was very pleased to meet the Dave MacDonald family, Sherry, Rich, Vicki, and his brother, Doug. Each was very nice in listening and sharing stories about Dave. I have been a fan of Dave MacDonald ever since I first saw him racing Corvettes at Riverside in 1961. I was also thrilled to see the #98 King Cobra again in person. Thanks to Bill Hartman for restoring and showing this historic race car that is so significant in the racing legacy of Dave MacDonald.

I especially enjoyed the panel discussion which included Bob Bondurant, Sherry MacDonald, Parnelli Jones, Pete Brock, and other Cobra drivers and mechanics. Sherry was eloquent and very passionate in representing and speaking for Dave. It was really a great event. Dave would be very proud of Sherry and his family, and how they have carried on for him in his absence.
