Hello Sherry and Richie, Its been such a long time since I’ve seen you two and it’ll take a bit of head scratching to remember I’m sure. I was the 10 yr old Douglas that lived in the house behind you and George & Marie. I used to come over to help Dave hold heaters while doing fiberglass work on his Corvettes, went home itching and caught all heck for it but I loved it. I raced quarter midgets at the time and sometimes used your front yard lawn to turn around and go back down the long driveway. Even though I tried to be gentle on your lawn still caught heck for that two. Hope you forgave me. I think about Dave often and really miss him, HE WAS MY HERO and still is. I fight back the tears every time. I’ve told his story to many, especially to my son who has done some racing also. About a year ago I spoke to a gentleman who knows you and learned you have been doing well. Just wanted to say Hi and let you know my prayers are still with you all and Dave. Its been about 46 years since then, so I only knew you and Richie but send love to all of your family.

I will never forget.

Doug

Hello, I just wanted to tell you how much of an honor it was meeting Shery @ AUGUSTA , for the first annual racing event in 2006, honoring Dave and Glen, together. I was hired by the late Pam Roberts Trivette years ago. She was like a sister to me. Wayne Haynes..

Hello- I’m searching for information/pictures of the Stan Peterson Sunbeam Tiger. Stan Peterson was involved in many venues of racing in the 60s and probably bumped cars with Dave. The Sunbeam Tiger won the NHRA Championship at Vaca Speedway in May 1965, then ran at Bonneville later. I recently realized my old Race Beaut Tiger is the Stan Peterson Tiger and plan to restore to the condition at the time of May 1965. Any help or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Regards-Chris Richards

I just stumbled into here and wanted to thank you for your site. My Dad, John Knowland worked with Dave when we lived in Azusa. We had a lot of Corvettes in our little house garage in those days. Dave’s death pretty much devastated my Dad, Dave was always a hero to all of us.

Amazing era of motor racing before my time, have read so much history about Dave and his driving ability been a Shelby fan!!!

Im from New Zealand so it was also the McLaren/Hulme era, like Dave both long since past on. I didn’t realize Dave died so young, and to see you Sherry with him in the old racing photos is simply amazing, what great times in the "fastlane" you must have had. Glad to see he’s know been Honoured. Dale(NZL)

<!--323622-->Just finished watching a pair of videos of the 1963 Pacific GP and 1963 Times GP, both of which Dave won over an international field. The link originated from the SCCA Cal Club Solo2 website to the 2 9 minute videos. I had never heard of Dave McDonald until them but obviously an extremely talented driver. Would have put many of todays drifters to shame.

Thanks for the additional info.

As young men growing up in southern California, my best friend and I became huge Dave MacDonald race fans. To this day, nearly 50 years later, we still talk and reminisce often about Dave MacDonald and Riverside Raceway. Dave was the best, so cool, and had such a unique driving style. His 00 Corvettes were beautifully prepared and always driven all-out. One of my fondest memories is of Dave MacDonald in the Don Steves’ Corvette racing with Ken Miles in the Otto Zipper’ Ferrari Berlinetta Coupe at Riverside. Two great drivers and great race cars. And of course, that great racing carried over to the Cobras. Those were the best of times, and Dave was the heart of it.

I attended the closed circuit telecast of the 1964 Indy 500 at the LA Sports Arena, and like everyone, was heart-broken and devastated by the tragedy that day. To me, Dave was the greatest, and was just beginning what should have been a long and very successful racing career.

My thanks and appreciation to the MacDonald family for creating this fine tribute to Dave MacDonald. It helps keep our memories alive. I would also highly recommend the Michael Antonick book, "California Screamin’" which is dedicated to Dave’s memory.

I’m so glad to see this site. I grew up just miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and I swear that all past drivers and participants gather every May to watch the Greatest Spectical not only in racing but the World!

Being a long time fan of auto racing, I had the opportunity to see Dave drive at Sebring and Daytona. I was listening to the radio when the crash occurred at Indy. I was very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. This is something that has stuck with me for a very long , especially after reading through this site. I am sure that Dave would have been one of the greats in racing today had he survived. This site is full of wonderful photos and it shows the public a side of this great driver many of us had not known. Please keep up the good work.

As a Corvette historian and Z-06 enthusiast I marvel at Dave’s accomplished. Never got to meet Dave personally, but over the years of researching Z-06 racecars I’ve gotten to know him and I’m if we were to meet today we be friends.

Thanks for sharing Dave’s story with everyone and a very special thanks from me! Franz

My high school friend (Fred Martin cousin of Dave MacDonald) and I were working on a car and listening to the race on the radio when the accident happened. A little later Fred’s mother came out to tell us that Dave had died from his injuries. Not long after the race was over, Fred and I went to his parents restaurant and Mr. Martin showed a movie clip of the accident. It’s the same one that you see today on YOUTUBE. I did not know Dave MacDonald, but have never forgotten that day or the movie clip that Mr. Martin showed us.

I just finished reading the book "Mickey Thomspon". I never knew that Dave MacDonald was Mickey Thompson’s driver at the Indy race. It was quite a story and I am sharing the book with friends and family. When I hear the word Indy, I think of Dave MacDonald.

Thank you for sharing the information and pictures. -- Larry Hilton

Thanks very much for providing Dave’ story. I have wanted to know more about Dave MacDonald for a long time. I was listening to the Indy 500 on that Saturday morning in 1964, which effected me deeply. To me the race ended on the second lap.

I grew up in Texas, but when I was in the Navy in the middle and late 60’s, I was able to attend many of the Races at Riverside. Though I never got to see Dave drive, I saw most of the drivers he competed against, and was impossible not to think about Dave, especially at turn 6.

Thanks again, I have learned alot.

I am David’s first cousin. His mom and my dad were brother and sister. He is still remembered by the family when ever we get together. I lived a few houses from him. My favorite story when we both about 4 is his mom baking pies all day and David and I were helping. His mom lined several pies on the floor of the back of the car and stated "Dave now you and Sally be sure to step in the middle of each of them" Our only concern was to do it with our shoes on or off. We solved the problem with Dave taking his shoes off and I left my shoes on. It was a memorable Thanksgiving. Love Sally

I’ve been a lifelong Cobra fan and I love the old Photos of Dave driving the cobra, hanging the rear end out and his head cocked to one side. They’re great pictures of a great driver. You can look at those pictures and see his confidence and clamness behind the wheel.

Definately one of my all time favorite Drivers. God rest his soul.
